We are in the middle of a housing crisis across the nation. For many East Texas, it has become more difficult to make the monthly mortgage payment. But what about those in our community that might be on the verge of being homeless or worse - far removed from realizing the American dream. That is where a massive group of volunteers have stepped up. I am speaking of Habitat for Humanity - KLTV's Community Spotlight for August. Habitat For Humanity of Smith County and Longview Habitat For Humanity are non-profit organizations with a goal to eliminate poverty and homelessness from the face of the earth by building adequate and basic housing. These groups assemble with a plan, and it usually involves dozens of volunteers and the prospective new homeowner working together to build a new home. Individuals and church and school groups all come together under skilled supervision and a new home is constructed. You don't have to have any experience in construction just a willingness to help and you can get involved through the donation of time, materials, even land to build on. We have links from our Community Spolight section on KLTV.com to Longview Habitat For Humanity and Habitat For Humanity of Smith County so you can learn more.
