Longview Votes on Smoking Ordinance

By a vote of 4-to-3, the City Council of Longview approved a measure that would put tough restrictions on smoking in the city. Supporters and opponents of the ordinance made their last minute appeals on the measure.  But in the end, a majority of the council decided their was enough of a health concern to pass the motion. Smoking will be allowed in bars provided that no employees or patrons are under 21. Smoking will be prohibited in restaurants unless they have an enclosed smoking section with proper ventilation, with no one under 18 in the smoking area. Hotels will have their choice to designate smoking and non-smoking rooms and smoking will be allowed in private clubs and buildings. The new smoking ordinance would go into effect by September 1st.
