Nursing home fire forces evacuation

By Philippe Djegal - email

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - A one alarm fire forced an evactuation Tuesday morning at the Colonial Tyler Care Center.

The fire was discovered by an employee in an unoccupied patient room. But, by the time the fire department arrived on the scene, an employee had already put the fire out with a fire extingiusher.

Investigators say a damaged chord connected to an electric bed caught fire, setting off the building's alarm.

"It could have been damaged, pinched, days [or] weeks ago and it's just today as a result of resistance heating, it appeared that the insulation finally ignited on that chord," said Deputy Fire Marshall James Suggs.

There are no reported injuries and the nursing home patients were eventually allowed back inside the facility.
