TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Millions of Americans are working part-time jobs - often working more than one just to make ends meet. But, how nice would it be to be a part timer and receive the same benefits as a full-timer? Well, it's possible and there are plenty of businesses in East Texas hiring and offering more than just a salary.
Stephanie Connelly is a single mother of three, working 20 hours a week at Fedex Express, while going to school at UT Tyler.
So, for Connelly, working full time is not an option, nor is it something she has to do because on top of her salary, Fedex Express has a benefits program for its part timers.
"It's very nice," said Connelly. "It creates some security for the kids as well; for especially the dental and the vision and the medical as well. Yea, it's very nice."
Fedex Express offers flexible spending accounts and prescription drug benefits, as well as, basic life insurance, short term disability and paid vacations.
"I work in the mornings, and the kids have events in the mornings at school, and I can take the day off and get it paid and not have to worry about that to go to their events," said Connelly.
But, they're not the only company offering part timer's benefits. Barnes and Noble, Target, Lowe's, Starbucks and Walgreens all have similar programs.
"We know things come up and certain people can't get a full 40," said Brett McAnally.
And, for those who work 30 hours a week or less at Walgreens, an optional health, dental and insurance plan is available.
"Once you show people profit sharing, and they get into the dental and medical coverage, they don't want to go anywhere else because its hard to find," explained McAnally.
Currently, JC Penny in Tyler is hiring more than 40 part timers for its back to school season. And, all of those positions offer benefits.
"It shows that no matter what level or status you have within a company that your benefits are a big deal for everybody - especially in this day in age," said Lon Hawkins, assistant manager at JC Penny.
According to the Bureau of Labor statistics, nearly 20% of the U.S. workforce is made up of part time employees. Fedex Express in Tyler, Walgreens and JC Penny say they are hiring. So, drop by one of those locations and fill out an application if you're looking for work.
