Tips to take down those pesky pests

NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - "Our call volume has increased quite a bit just in the last couple months, just for general pest control, which includes ants, spiders, wasps, roaches, earwigs, silverfish," said Owner of Carra's Pest and Termite, Carra' Liles.

The problem is too much heat and not enough rain. Water is a food source for pests.

"Just like you and me, they're looking for a cool place to stay, be it your home," Carra' said.

They found a place at one East Texas home.

"We have a huge deck in the back, and one day my husband and I went out and we saw these three little mounds," said homeowner Sherry Pfaffenberg.

They had tried to eliminate pests before on their own.

"We decided to do our own treatment, but what we didn't realize is that we weren't able to treat for the termites," Pfaffenberg said.

So, she called Carra', and Carra' said you can try to zap pests with store products, but treatment is your best bet.

"That's just for a spot treatment, but that won't eliminate your problem, especially if you have a major infestation," Carra' said.

However, there are a few things you can do to make the pests buzz off.

"Sanitation practices tying up your garbage, eliminate harborage areas for them," said Carra'.

If you wait to treat the pesky creatures, it could just get worse.

"Don't think that it's going to go away," said Pfaffenberg. "We thought, 'Well, this is just a fluke,' and it really wasn't a fluke and Carra' was even able to show me some old damage from termites and we were able to rip the wood apart and it's on my house."

Most treatments last up to a year, but it's a good idea to have a follow-up visit.

Also, in addition to treating for the pests, you can fix places that pests can gain entry and remember to treat your pets for fleas.
