Big Sandy's Turner Headed to Winona

BIG SANDY, Texas (KLTV) -- The coaching carousel continues in East Texas.

Late Monday night, Winona approved Big Sandy coach Darold Turner as their new Athletic Director and Head Coach.

Turner was first contacted about the job last week.

He says it was a very difficult decision to leave Big Sandy, but the chance to coach the Wildcats was too good to pass up.

"Winona have a lot of tradition there. It's been several, several years since they've been in the playoffs in football, but we really want to work real hard, and get them back at that level where we are competing for a spot in the playoffs. I believe that they have the keys there to do that," explained Turner.

The late move leaves Big Sandy without a head coach.

Superintendent Scott Beene said that they will accept applications over the next ten days.

Big Sandy I.S.D. hopes to hire a new head coach by July 23.
