Chemical spill shuts down Highway 59 in Shelby County

SHELBY COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - An accident involving an 18-wheeler carrying reported hazardous material has emergency crews are on the scene of what Shelby County officials are calling a major chemical spill between Timpson and Tenaha on Highway 59. The Shelby County Sheriff's office is working to divert traffic.

There are no reports of injuries at this time.

A haz-mat team has been called in and clean-up is expected to last the majority of Tuesday.  TXDOT has evacuated some local residents near the affected area. Warning signs are posted. As a precautionary measure, residents are asked to stay away from the affected area until at least 7 o'clock tonight.
