Retailers down but Charities up in Longview

Although retailers say people did not spend as much money on the holidays as years past, charities fared well with donations from the public. Charitable organizations like the Salvation Army, Marine Toys For Tots, and the Highway 80 Rescue Mission had another outstanding year of being able to help the less fortunate. The Salvation Army Angel Tree Program provided toys, clothes and food for 585 families, and 1400 nursing home residents, while Toys for Tots provided gifts for 12-hundred children. Organizers say it is a testament to the good hearts of East Texans. And the charities say that the spirit of giving shouldn't end with the holidays. Donations are glady accepted year round.
