WebXtra: Fewer wheels to deliver meals

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - It's a simple albeit unofficial rule: If you work hard you're entitled to a little break every once a while. Summer time means vacation time for many, and business employers manage the flow of their work force. Organizations relying on volunteers don't have that luxury.

Meals On Wheels delivers to 38 routes in Tyler every day. Volunteers put in their time, averaging close to 70,000 hours every year, the equivalent of nearly half a million dollars. Recently, due to the summer vacation months and the price of gasoline, the number of volunteers has dropped. Starting this summer, Meals On Wheels representatives have been forced to find substitutes or deliver the hot meals themselves to close to 100 seniors each day.

The organization is currently able to take care of their current deliveries. However, if additional people sign up for meals, they may be forced to put them on a waiting list; a consequence organizers would like to avoid at all costs.

Volunteers usually give an hour of their time each day taking meals to those who are unable to cook for themselves. If you are interested in helping Meals On Wheels, you may contact them at 800-451-2912.
