Longview Firefighters Urge Holiday Fire Safety

With the holiday season, homes become crowded with Christmas trees, gifts and numerous other decorations and can quickly become a tinderbox.  East Texas fire departments are urging homeowners to have a fire extinguisher and smoke detector in their homes. The biggest culprit is the Christmas tree, which can go up in seconds fueling a bigger fire. But if fire is caught in time, a homeowner can avoid disaster with a fire extinguisher.

Firefighters say citizens should use what they call p.a.s.s.; meaning pull the pin, aim, squeeze and then spray in controlled bursts at the base of the fire in a side to side motion. Spending a little now, could save everything you own. The Longview Fire Department says that in the event of fire, you should get out immediately and call 9-1-1 and only fight a fire that is small or that is blocking your escape route out of the structure.
