MMA event coming to Tyler

By: Ryan Peterson - email

Tyler, Texas (KLTV) - Wild nicknames, punches to the body and kicks to the face.  Welcome to the world of mixed martial arts.

"When you step in the cage you're more hurt than you are injured," said Tyler native 'Hurricane' Kris Hobbs.  "You just have to push through it. That's just part of the sport

"If you've got a full time job during the day like I do, you're going to miss work," said Lindale native 'Razor' Ross Cates.  "Bumps, bruises, you're going to have to spend time away from your family, it's a sacrifice for everything."

So why make the sacrifice? These guys are having a blast.

"A lot of it's the adrenaline rush," said Cates.  "It is a rough sport, but it can also be fun"

"I didn't go pro in football or baseball," said Hobbs.  "This is the only other professional sport I could compete in, mixed martial arts."

The drive to compete has kept Hobbs and Cates on the road during their young careers.  On June 27th they'll get to fight in their home state for the first time.  The first pro M.M.A. event to ever come to East Texas will be at the Oil Palace in Tyler.

"It's going to be indescribable," said Hobbs.  "The emotional part of it is already like a tidal wave."

Cates could put himself on the M.M.A. map, if he can beat three time world champion amateur wrestler Manny Del Rio.

"This will be my biggest fight by far," said Cates.  "I'm confident coming in here that I don't feel like anyone's going to beat me in my hometown."

If Cates can win, he may be able to quit his day job.

The John Tyler Lions always seem to look sharp in their uniforms. But thanks to East Texas lawyer Keith Miller, the Lions will look better and play safer. Helmets that advertise lowering the impact of hits, and possibly reduce the amount of concussions, come with a hefty price-tag. Miller's donation of 7,500 dollars, will go to help the lions cover that cost. "Keith Miller's been a big sponsor of John Tyler High School football program for years now.  I know it's...More >>

The last time we talked about the Kilgore Bulldogs, quarterback Buddy Jackson and wide receiver Jonathan Shepherd were apart of the 800-meter relay team that won gold at the 2017 state track meet. But today they are back in the pads, and looking to turn their speed into touchdowns.  Competing in District 9-4A, Kilgore has always had a strong run game that helped them become the 2016 District Champs.
