Cheap Eats: Texas twist to traditional treat

EAST TEXAS (KLTV) - I started halfway between Tyler and Kilgore on Highway 31. Smokey's BBQ was hard to miss, not because of their sign, but a beautiful smoke signal. I pulled into the driveway and look forward to smoked meat masterpieces. Inside, I was greeted by Smokey himself who told me the story behind their BBQ.

"After I retired my wife said, 'We need something to do,' so she said, 'Lets make a sandwich shop,' so I said, 'Ain't nobody gonna buy a tuna fish sandwich,'" said Smokey. "'Let's sell BBQ."

And, he does just that, selling a BBQ sandwich, chips and a can drink for $5. But wait! There was more...for first timers at Smokey's, they get a special treat. It's a free dessert made from scratch by Smokey's wife. Can you say jackpot?!

Next up, I headed over to Cafe Izzy outside of Kilgore where they put a tasty spin on a traditional dish. I walked inside to check the Cheap Eat options.

"You get an Izzy Burger [which is] kinda like a Philly cheese steak with a Texas twist to it," explained Adrienne Hernandez, owner of the restaurant. "You'll love it."

I took Adrienne's word for it and let her go to work. The chef finished up in the kitchen and the second deal of the day was walked out to my table. An Izzy Burger and a tea only rings up to $4.87. Thanks Izzy!

My final stop was El Paisano Perez in Tyler where your cheap eats abound. I headed inside. You get three tacos and a can drink for only $4.05, making it this weeks "Cheap Eats" winner.
