KILGORE, TX (KLTV) - An East Texas town has decided to go smoke free. Kilgore City Council members met Tuesday night to discuss an ordinance that prohibits smoking in public places and work sites.
The new decision prohibits smoking in public places such as restaurants. The ordinance also prohibits smoking in all indoor and outdoor areas used by employees in places of employment or workplaces. Also, smoking in city parks, playgrounds, and recreational areas is prohibited.
However, there are also some exemptions in the smoking ordinance. So far, bars and other businesses who have 50 percent of their revenue generated from alcohol sales are exempt.
Residents and business owners we've talked to are split right down the middle on the smoking ban. The ones in favor of it say they can't stand the effects of second hand-smoke, while opponents are saying smokers should be able to light up wherever they want.
