Authorities Resolve Several Burglary Cases

Authorities now have three suspects in several northern Smith County break-ins. They believe two men in jail on unrelated charges and a woman are responsible. No arrests have been made, but stolen property found inside a Malakoff residence links the trio to several Smith County cases.

"We believe the property we recovered was being brought to the residence and traded for drugs,"says Major Mike Lusk with the Smith County Sheriff's Department. "We have some cooperating individuals who are giving us information at this point," he added.

Detectives spent the day sorting through television sets, power tools and stereos. They've officially linked the items to eight Smith County burglaries. It's possible the bandits also hit homes in Wood, Henderson and Van Zandt counties. "We encourage anyone who has had a residential burglary in North Smith County, or any surrounding county to give us a call at the sheriff's office," says Major Lusk.

Investigators are now using serial numbers to trace the property back to its rightful owners. They recommend all holiday shoppers write down serial numbers as soon as they get their gifts. Those numbers could prove helpful later on.
