LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) - An east Texas musician, fighting a debilitating disease, gets help from a benefit concert in Gladewater. The concert at the Gladewater Opry was to help a fellow musician with the fight of his life.

"We're here to try to pay tribute and help out a fellow musician who has taught us and forgotten more than we'll ever know in music," said benefit singer Sherry Lee.

75 year old Larry McGuire has played with some of the giants in the music industry, from big bands to solo acts like Judy Garland. But now suffers from severe respiratory c-o-p-d.

"He's a guitar players guitarist, I've never heard the man say a bad word about anybody" said longtime fellow musician Verne Cold iron.

Though he had enormous success in music, McGuire kept his east Texas roots.

"Oh yeah, he was born in Louisiana raised in Mount Pleasant, that's the way musicians do each other they may go off and be successful but when they hear, they come to help" says Larry's wife of 42 years, Bette McGuire.

"He's played a thousand benefits and its time he got one" Verne says.

He mentored hundreds of fledgling musicians, and today they wanted to give something back. In the twilight of his life, his fellow musicians wanted to do for him what he had done for so many. Make music.

"I would think it is the ultimate compliment to a musician like himself that musicians would come together and band together for a fellow musician" says Lee.

Proceeds from today's benefit will go to help McGuire and his wife with medical expenses.
