7 on Your Side: Cunning and clever, they disguise ATM's

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - They can swindle you whenever you swipe. Authorities in Austin say con artists are installing equipment on ATMs that can read and copy your debit card and pin numbers, to create an exact copy of your card.

Cunning and clever they disguise ATM's. The thieves are using a "skimmer"  to scam you, and it's installed over the front card slot. One swipe...and your personal information is transmitted to the crooks, usually waiting in a nearby car.

"It's like a whole new world of scam operators," said Kay Robinson, with the Better Business Bureau.

U.T. Austin police sent out a warning with photos. Here's something to look for. It looks like a leaflet holder, but it's really a hidden, wireless camera that records your pin number as you enter it. The BBB worries that because these devices are hard to spot, people may never notice them until it's too late.

"I would do this in a heartbeat," said Robinson. "I would stick my card in there and not think anything about it."

To protect yourself, only use secured ATM's. Ones inside bank lobbies or under security cameras. Another helpful tip, cover the keypad while you enter your pin so no one can record or see it.

Better to be safe than sorry, especially now that the crooks are going high-tech.

"Somebody had to really spend a lot of time and money developing this deal," said Robinson.

If you see any kind of attachment, you're urged not to use the ATM and report it to the bank immediately by using the phone number on the front of the machine.
