A city ordinance that would ban smoking in all public buildings in Longview will have to wait. The city council tabled the measure Thursday.
Both sides of the zero tolerance smoking ordinance filled city council chambers with their own viewpoints on how fair or unreasonable this proposed ordinance would be.
The issue essentially boils down to an argument over individual rights against public health. It was a sometimes hostile crowd as city council fielded comments for a second day on the smoking ban... Health-care workers and non-smoking advocates wildly in favor. Business owners and smokers angrily against.
Restaurant and bar owners argued the council needed to postpone the vote to study how it would impact businesses. Supporters cited that it has worked in other cities. The measure will be taken up again in spring.
