They had a fiddlin' good time!

By Jamey Boyum - email

ATHENS, TX (KLTV) - Sometimes you just can't beat that down-home country music. Some world class fiddlers took an East Texas stage for the 78th annual Athens Old Fiddlers Contest and Reunion.

I was there to see the winner declared...well...sort of.

The contest, already under way, was the under 65th division. Those guys knew how to drag a bow. I figured the judges would be able to make a decision quickly.

"Some of them fiddle good enough, the only thing you can judge is a mistake. Three guys tied here," an onlooker explained to me.

"Is that common," I asked.

"It happens a lot. We've seen 3 - 4 - 5 playoffs to determine a winner," said the onlooker.

this is perfect timing. The best fiddlers going head to head...or chin to chin.

I watched some more fiddling and then it was time.

The judges calculated the scores, and a winner is declared.

"In 5th place is Jacob Johnson," said the announcer.

"Wait...fifth place," I thought to myself.

"The first four places that came in, you just missed them," said the onlooker. "Good fiddlers."

Bummer! Well, next year I'll get there much earlier.
