East Texas school brings home top honors

LINDALE, TX - The Lindale Eagles can add several more state championship trophies to their case after an impressive finish in the state Academics Spring Meet.

The Lindale Speech/Debate team won the state title. The speech team tied for a first place finish with Gregory-Portland High School with 7.50 points. This is the fourth state championship in five years for Lindale's speech/debate team. The Eagles also won the state crown in 2004, 2005, and 2006.

The Eagles competed Monday and Tuesday at the University of Texas in Austin. In the overall point standings, the Eagles placed third in the state with 78.50.

In Lincoln-Douglas Debate, senior Philip Hayes scored 15 points for a first place finish. It was another top honor for Hayes who spoke at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota last fall.

Senior Levi Herrera placed first in Literary Criticism earning 15 points.

The Eagles tied for third place in the Cross-Examination Debate, finishing with 11 points along with Waco Midway.

In the journalism competitions, senior Amy Skipper placed second in Editorial Writing with 12 points. In News Writing, sophomore Stephanie O'Conner placed second. O'Conner also finished with 12 points.

Tyler Rutledge finished in fifth place in Informative Speaking.
