HAWKINS (KLTV) - Gray skies are clearing up in Hawkins. State, local, and federal authorities say they are still working to completely quench the tire fire right off Highway 14.
The evacuation order has been lifted, and officials say they hope to have the bulk of the fire extinguished by this afternoon.
Hour after hour Tuesday night authorities from all over East Texas worked tirelessly, moving thousands of gallons of water from the Sabine river to quench the massive tire fire in Hawkins. Cranes have been brought in to disperse what remains of the tires and remove any chance of a restart.
The EPA says pollution levels never reached active levels.
There is still no word on what caused the fire. Authorities are calling the fire "suspicious" and have not ruled out arson.
