East Texans generating solar savings

LINDALE, TX (KLTV) - Generating solar savings. About a month ago, we showed you how a Lindale man was installing solar panels at his home. Now the project is complete, and he's already producing more than half of his energy from the sun.

Howard Beggs installed a 5,000 watt system. His son Dale installed a 10,000 watt system.

"We have a family and we have a lot more electricity usage than he does," said Dale Beggs.

Dale works with Green-Life Technologies, encouraging East Texans to take advantage of solar savings. While systems like Howard's cost around $35,000, you get a 30% federal tax credit plus cash incentives from some utility companies. Howard says in the long run, going green will save you green.

"It's producing more than 70% of my power so far," said Howard Beggs.

His first bill gave a comparison. The 20 days before, without his solar power system, he used 652 kilowatt hours, but in the 14 days after installation was complete, he only used 51 hours.

"Is it about what you thought it would be," I asked Howard.

"I didn't think it would be that good," he replied. "It's better than I thought it would be."

They say maintenance is practically nothing.

"If it ever collects dust then you can just hose it off with a water hose," said Howard.

"Like today, we had a shower and any dust that was accumulated it washed it off," agreed Dale.

And they say it's designed to withstand 90 mile-an-hour winds. The only thing they need is a sunny spot.

"Shade is an enemy of them," said Dale. "If you have a quarter of this module blocked with shade then it'll just knock out the power generation of the entire module."

Howard says it not only feels good to help the environment, but to be financially free from future energy rate hikes.

The John Tyler Lions always seem to look sharp in their uniforms. But thanks to East Texas lawyer Keith Miller, the Lions will look better and play safer. Helmets that advertise lowering the impact of hits, and possibly reduce the amount of concussions, come with a hefty price-tag. Miller's donation of 7,500 dollars, will go to help the lions cover that cost. "Keith Miller's been a big sponsor of John Tyler High School football program for years now.  I know it's...More >>

The last time we talked about the Kilgore Bulldogs, quarterback Buddy Jackson and wide receiver Jonathan Shepherd were apart of the 800-meter relay team that won gold at the 2017 state track meet. But today they are back in the pads, and looking to turn their speed into touchdowns.  Competing in District 9-4A, Kilgore has always had a strong run game that helped them become the 2016 District Champs.
