HAWKINS, TX (KLTV) - An estimated 100,000 tires are burning in Hawkins near Highway 80 and FM 14. Smoke from the blaze that began Monday night continues to fill the sky.
At a press conference Tuesday afternoon, authorities did not say how the fire began, but do believe it to be suspicious. Authorities added that they hope to have the flames out by Wednesday morning. Until the fire is out, officials will be on the scene 24/7.
Hawkins was evacuated Tuesday morning. Mayor Sam Bradley said anyone living within the city limits or anyone who can smell smoke needs to get out.
School officials also say classes for Hawkins ISD have been canceled and classes for Jarvis Christian College have been delayed.
Our photographer on the scene at the time of the fire said he could feel the heat from the road, which was about 120 yards away from the fire.
Several fire departments responded to help put out the blaze. Firefighters warn resident to stay away from the area.
