TYLER, TX - When temperatures start to top above 100 degrees and we crank up the air conditioner and pour ourselves some sweet tea, we sometimes forget what that sweltering heat does to those among us not blessed with the ability or freedom to find relief. What most of us find just incredibly uncomfortable, others can find life-threatening, particularly those without air conditioning or those who cannot afford the cost of the meager relief of window unit. Those people must find some relief or face homelessness, illness, or even death.
In recognition of this very real threat to the members of the East Texas community, The Salvation Army in Tyler is hosting its annual fan drive with an event on Saturday, May 30th. From 9am - 2pm, staff and volunteers will be available to take new box fans in the parking lot of The Scroll bookstore in the Loop East Shopping Plaza. From 11am-1pm, anyone donating a fan will receive a free hot dog and drink to show appreciation for those who give so generously of their resources for people who have none of their own. Coupons for 25% off a purchase at The Salvation Army Family Store will also be given to donors. KVNE Radio will be on hand, doing a live broadcast, and donors can also give blood from 1-5pm with the Carter Blood Drive.
