Asthma awareness day

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - It's a condition affecting close to 20 million Americans. Today members of U.T. Health Science Center reached out to those suffering from asthma. Bergfeld Park was the site for U.T. Health Science Center's "Asthma Awareness Day."

Visitors who suspected they had the condition were able to get an expert opinion and take part in free asthma screening. The event served to help those who can't afford medical costs and to spread knowledge of the prolific illness.

UTHSCT doctors volunteered their Saturday morning, making sure East Texans received necessary medical attention.

"I love the fact that we can get people that aren't aware or being treated and at least direct them to talk to their doctor about this. We're doing lung functions on them so they have hard data they can show their doctor to be helpful," said allergist Dr. Paul Sharkey.

U.T. Health Science Center's next community asthma outreach is coming up. Their annual kids asthma camp held at Camp Tyler is June 14th through the 19th.
