PALESTINE, TX (KLTV) - An East Texas man has now been charged with the murder of his wife. Police found the body of 62-year-old Darlene Cook in the bathroom of her home on West Tap Road in Palestine. That discovery came after her husband had a shootout with police, authorities say.
Darlene's family said they are trying to move forward, but they also say the shock of losing a family member and having another in custody is still sinking in. According to police, they are charging 62-year-old Ronnie Cook with the murder of his wife. He already faces attempted murder charges for his shoot out with police.
Just days after the family celebrated Mother's Day the Palestine home, police had a gun battle after responding to a dead body call Wednesday night. Police say when they showed up, Ronnie opened fire on them. Two hours into the standoff, Ronnie began to negotiate terms of his surrender. Soon after midnight, he turned himself in to authorities in a bizarre way.
"He actually had a set of handcuffs in the residence and agreed to put them on himself and walked out of the residence," said Jeffrey Powell, with the Palestine Police Department. "So, he was taken into custody without any problem once he decided to come out of the house."
The handcuffs used by Cook came from his previous experience as an instructor for concealed handgun courses. Ronnie was taken the hospital for injuries unrelated to the shooting. None of the officers were hurt because they did what they were trained to do and got into defensive positions.
