SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - Nursing home residents...Yeah, they just want to have fun! And, this week, that's exactly what they get to do. It's National Nursing Home Week. One East Texas healthcare facility hit the lake hoping to make a big catch.

They've been looking forward to it all week...

"He wants to go home," said Mary Davis, looking at the fish she caught. "He's too little."

Van Healthcare Center residents hit the outdoors for a little fun in the sun.

"Just because you're in a healthcare facility doesn't mean you can't have a lot of fun and a lot of enjoyment," said Ethel Miller, the activity director. "We want everyone to celebrate the facilities with us."

Van Healthcare has special events planned every day this week, but 62-year-old Joe Hardaway said there is nothing like a day on the lake.

"I'm hoping to get something, but I haven't got a bite yet," said Hardaway.

Patience is a virtue Joe, especially when fishing.

"I'm patient, but pretty soon my patience will run out, if you know what I mean," said Hardaway.

Van Healthcare said this week it is all about the residents.

"My hope in life, I can't add quantity to their lives, but I can add quality and smiles, and that's what my goal is," said Miller.

It's a goal that a fishing excursion seemed to achieve!
