SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - It's the week nursing home residents look forward to every year, National Nursing Home Week. Van Healthcare Center is taking full advantage of it. It has special events planned everyday this week. Wednesday, it was about fishing.

Around six Van Healthcare Center residents and several volunteers headed to Tyler State Park this afternoon. They were hoping to make that big catch. It was a little slow at first, but Mary Davis, 76 found the hot spot catching one fish after the other. Van Healthcare Center says events like these are about improving the quality of life for its residents.

"Just because you're in a healthcare facility doesn't mean you can't have a lot of fun and a lot of enjoyment, and we want everyone to celebrate the facilities with us," said Van Healthcare Center Activity Director Ethel Miller. "My hope in life is I can't add quantity to their lives, but I can add quality and smiles, and that's what my goal is."

Some of the residents are quite the fishermen. You can hear their fishing tales coming up on East Texas News at 5.
