Freedom Fighters: C.A. Marshall

By Joan Hallmark - bio | email

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - For over 60 years, C.A. Marshall has carried around a tiny yellowed newspaper article about the submarine service in World War II. But the newspaper clip only tells a bit of what Marshall saw firsthand on a submarine tender.

Marshall's ship was on its way to Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941 when he heard about the Japanese attack on our Naval base there. When his ship arrived at Pearl February 2nd, after a detour, the effects of the devastating attack were still evident.

Marshall was to serve in the South Pacific throughout the war and on his ship"The Fulton" would help to rescue 2,300 men off the U.S. Carrier, The Yorktown, in the Battle of Midway, a turning point in the war.

After the war was over, Marshall turned his training and experience in submarine diesel engines into a 35 year career with the Santa Fe Railroad.
