EAST TEXAS, TX (KLTV) - It was another Cheap Eats day and I was all set to go until...
"What happened to my lunch last week," KLTV 7 weatherman Mark Scirto asked me.
Uh oh! I thought. Remembering that tasty meal I ate last week.
"I'll see what I can do," I replied.
On the road I spotted livers and gizzards and had to stop. Pop's Chicken and Burgers showed possibility, so I investigated. I placed my order and watched the first deal of the day come to life. You can always tell great food is coming just by the way it sounds. They brought it out to me: a hamburger, half order of fries and a drink for just $4.79.
My second find was in Frankston at Charlie's BBQ. Inside I struck Cheap Eats gold. After ordering I watched owner Charlie Rhodes create barbeque goodness. Add some of his famous beans and fill up a soda and you get Charlie's Cheap Eat. A small sandwich, meat of your choice, any side and a drink is only $4.87. I loaded it up and enjoyed every bite of my sandwich, but word to the wise, using perdition sauce causes refills...several of them.
My last stop was a Palestine tradition, Subs and Dogs. A posted monthly special fit the bill as owner Larry Chaffins explained his business strategy.
"[It is] a good quality product and shares the burden of the cost with the customer," said Chaffins.
He accomplished that, making his special in the back. Serving it up I got this weeks Cheap Eats winner, a chicken breast sub and a drink for a mere $4.22. Walking outside I checked the time...and heard his words.
"Uh Morgan, lunch last week," Scirto's question echoed in my mind.
"I gotta go," I exclaimed.
I hurried back to the station and handed Scirto his well deserved meal.
