LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - The Lufkin Police Department arrested the director of the Lufkin Boys and Girls Club Wednesday on three counts of sexual performance by a child and three counts of possession of child pornography.

According to an arrest affidavit released by police, a person reported seeing child pornography on a laptop belonging to Patrick Sanders, 51, of Lufkin.

Sanders allowed detectives to take his laptop for examination, the affidavit stated, where they discovered numerous child pornography photos.

In one photo, a child was identified and interviewed by a detective. The child said Sanders took nude photos of him. The victim at the time was 17 years old.

According to the affidavit, Patrick admitted to taking the photographs at his home several months ago.

"We take these allegations very seriously," said Jeff Woods, executive director of Boys and Girls Club of Deep East Texas. "We put Mr. Sanders on leave once we knew of the investigation, which was yesterday."

Woods said Sanders was placed on paid leave until they found out more about the investigation.

Sanders worked for the Lufkin Boys & Girls Club for 13 years, Woods said, and he had no reason to suspect Sanders for any wrongdoing. He also said the Boys & Girls Club does background checks on all their employees.

"The safety of our children is the most important thing, and we want parents to feel comfortable bringing their kids to the Boys and Girls Club," Woods said. "Our staff is very qualified and able to handle the operation in his absence."

Woods said the Boys & Girls Club is not providing counseling to the children regarding the arrest, but they are sending a notification home in the form of a letter to parents, informing them about the incident and letting them know their children are safe.

Sanders' bond is set at $50,000 per count, totaling $300,000. A press release from LPD states several bond restrictions were also placed on him.

The Angelina Rotary Club named Sanders as a "Service Above Self" honoree in May of 2006 for his service at the Boys and Girls Club.

"The children need positive role models," Sanders said when accepting the award. "The need someone to be there for them and for me. I'm the positive person sometimes and my staff are the positive people and the constant person in their lives every day. They see us every day."

Sanders should not be confused with Patrick Sanders of Greater East Texas Head Start.
