MINEOLA, TX (KLTV) - From head to toe friends Emily and Kelly are decked out in duct tape. Lots of brightly colored tape, layered and fashioned for prom.
"We cut out the pattern pieces and then I covered them in duct tape," said Kelly.
"We ripped up old corsages and we made the roses out of duct tape," explained Emily.
And that's not all they made. Even their dates were duct taped.
"They're both pretty adventurous. They had fun with it."
In all, it took the girls about four months to design the perfect prom-taped dresses.
"We covered cutting boards in green duct tape and she drew the zebra stripes and I cut them because she had sliced her finger," laughed Emily.
All that time and effort to hopefully win scholarships from a competition called "Stuck at Prom" where high schoolers from all over the country let their imaginations run wild. Winners from past years all had their own style. All that's required is that 80 % of the outfit must be duct tape and the rest fabric.
"It's like a sheet material so it doesn't breathe or anything," said Kelly. "It's like hot and sweaty."
Emily even went an extra step. Her long mermaid-style dress was convertible. Just pull the Velcro and voila!
"I move this up and it's just a normal short dress I guess," said Emily.
Would you guess? The duct tape divas said they are sticking together, both wanting to major in interior and fashion design.
If the girls make the top ten, they're be eligible to win a $3,000 scholarship. It they win, their school would also receive $3,000.
