TYLER, TX (KLTV) - The "Rose Capital of the Nation" officially kicked off the 2009 rose season Sunday.

East Texans gathered at the Tyler Municipal Rose garden Sunday to celebrate the new rose blooms of the 2009 season.

More than 100 thousand people from around the world visit the rose garden each year.

Congressman Louie Gohmert gave the invocation today.  He says that even in this rough economy, you can always count on Tyler's rose industry.

"Regardless of what happens with oil and gas, or some of the other industries, the rose bushes mean so much in the way of money for the economy and that money gets passed around to others," says Representative Louie Gohmert.  "And, then all the tourists. Nobody comes into this town without buying gasoline, buying food, seeing other sites. So, it really is a huge boost for everybody."

One fifth of all commerical rose bushes produced in the united states are grown in Smith County. The 2009 Texas Rose Festival is this October 8th through the 10th.
