WebXtra: Soaking up clean energy

LINDALE, TX (KLTV) - On this Earth Day, some East Texans are installing solar paneling, so they can tap into the power of the sun.

By next week, Howard Beggs of Lindale expects to see savings on his utilities bills.

"At least 60 percent of my power is going to be supplied by these panels."

And Texas is helping homeowners and businesses go green. The state senate passed a solar energy rebate program Tuesday, helping Texans cut installation costs.

Dale Beggs of GreenLife Technologies says it not only generates clean energy but will save you in the long run.

"They range anywhere from seven to 10 dollars per watt of installed power and this system is a 5,000 watt system so that's around 35,000 dollars...they're a pretty big initial cost but they pay for themselves three to four times in a lifetime."

"The payout time is not that long especially after you get the incentives and of course you get a federal tax credit also," said Howard.
