NACOGDOCHES, TX (KLTV) - Nacogdoches ISD is preparing to vaccinate about 250 sixth graders Tuesday morning.

Refrigerators at the school are filled with meningitis, tetanus, diphtheria, chicken pox and whooping cough vaccines. An increase in whooping cough and meningitis led to the new guidelines. Also, doctors now know chicken pox boosters are needed sooner.

"There were some break thru diseases, so they were experiencing chicken pox at a later age, like middle school and high school age, even though they had received the vericilla vaccine before they started kindergarten," said Brenda Whitman NISD school nurse.

The 'Texas Vaccines for Children' program provides all the vaccines free of charge. Many schools and clinics are members. Otherwise, parents will have to pay for the vaccines which can run up to $150.
