TYLER, TX (KLTV) - During World War II thousands of soldiers went through their basic training right here in East Texas. Veterans of Camp Fannin reunited Saturday giving them a chance to look back on their first days in the armed forces.
Visitors met in the U.T. Health Science Center Chapel as area leaders gave remarks on the importance of America's military. Those attending left with a knowledge of Camp Fannin, but more importantly an appreciation for the sacrifice our soldiers give.
"I think they're trying to relive it, but also they know what a great country we have, and they're proud of their service, and it's a shame we all have to grow old, but those guys were part of the greatest generation ever came along in this country we'll miss them," said treasurer of the Camp Fannin Association Richard Smith. Guests were invited to a luncheon following the program. The next camp Fannin Veterans Reunion will be held mid November in Tyler.
