BROWNSBORO, TX (KLTV) - An East Texas grandfather is probably going to face charges after his 6-year-old grandson was discovered on the bus to school this morning with a loaded handgun.
We were in Brownsboro and Chandler late Thursday afternoon and talked to the mother of the little boy who told us about this entire incident. She said she is still in disbelief, and that the school called her Thursday morning just after nine. They told her a bus monitor had overheard a discussion her son was having with another student. The monitor thought it was suspicious, so she inspected the boy's backpack, and found a loaded 38 caliber pistol.
The boy was sent home from school, and is suspended indefinitely, but the Assistant Superintendent tolld us it could have been much worse.
"The gun never left his backpack, no one was ever in danger," said Vicki York, the BISD Asst. Superintendent. "The authorities were waiting for the bus when it got to school, and they basically handled most of the situation, took statements from the child and the monitor and the bus driver. "
The school did contact the parents of the kids on that bus to tell them what happened. The school and the sheriff's office told us the gun belonged to the grandfather which is why he could face charges of making a firearm accessible to a child, but, the mother told us the gun actually belongs to her and her father just had it for protection.
