GLADEWATER, TX (KLTV) - Qumar Zaman, who's known as John to his local customers has five kids and a wife to think about. So when his life was threatened, he took matters in his own hands.

"I pull a gun and he hit the door," said Zaman.

The suspect grabbed cash out of the register, after threatening Zaman with a gun to his face, but Zaman took some bold action. He following the robber outside where a shootout began.

"He had big ole' 9 millimeter gun," said Zaman. "He looked like a real criminal, and experienced guy. He's shooting very good."

The suspect shot at Zaman nine times. Amidst the gunfire, the store owner shot back, and the suspect dropped most of the cash, fleeing the scene.

"It's lucky to me like God saved me like that and the bullet passed over me like that," said the store owner. "He shoot me 10, 11 times"

Since this suspect is considered armed and dangerous and is still on the run, a woman we talked to who lives right across the street did not want to be identified.

"I got up and went to the door and John was laying on the ground, the store owner was laying on the ground and he was firing that way, and he was shooting about five or six times toward the right of me," she said.

Gladewater Police are interviewing witnesses and reviewing surveillance video to track down the suspect.

"I hope maybe he'll be scared enough now that he won't be coming back to Gladewater and robbing our convenience stores 'cause he doesn't know which ones are armed and do what they can to protect their stores," said the Gladewater police chief, Farrell Alexander.

Amazingly, Zaman just has a minor injury to his thumb, and no one else was injured.

"[It's] a miracle," said Zaman. "Yes ma'am, it's holy Sunday you know? Everybody [is] praying, and he's trying to do whatever a bad thing on a holy day like that."

Zaman was back at work the next day, not missing a beat or a second of life after this Easter miracle.

Police say after this shootout, the suspect maybe got away with 100 dollars, if that, because he dropped most of it. If you have any information, contact the Gladewater police department.
