GLADEWATER, TX (KLTV) - The Nu-Way convenience store in Gladewater is operating like normal now, but on Easter Sunday, as many people were in church, it was the scene of a dangerous shootout and the clerk was right in the middle of it.

Qumar Zaman says around 10:30 Sunday morning, he was threatened at gunpoint by a suspect, demanding cash out of the register. Zaman did as he was told, then followed the suspect outside, where the shootout began.

Police say the suspect fired nine shots towards Zaman, but the store's owner wasn't letting him go without a fight. Zaman picked up his own gun, firing at the suspect who dropped a large amount of cash and fled the scene.

"It's lucky to me like God saved me," said Zaman. "The bullet passed over me like that. He shoot me 10, 11 times."

"It's a miracle," I said.

"Yes ma'am, it's Holy Sunday, you know, everybody praying... but God saved me," he replied.

"I hope maybe he'll be scared enough now that he won't be coming back to Gladewater to rob our convenience stores cause he doesn't know which ones are armed and will do what they can to protect their stores," said Gladewater Chief of Police Farrell Alexander.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the robbery.
