WebXtra: East Texans make a safe investment

SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - The slow economy is forcing people to get creative on how to protect their money and anything else that's valuable and more people are opting for personal safes.

Bill Warren, with Locksmith Services of Tyler says East Texas locksmiths are seeing an increase in safe sales.

"I believe a lot of people are storing guns," he said. "That's what these are here. We sell a lot of high end gun safes. The liberties. I believe they're storing their weapons."

Bill says he noticed the increase in demand for safes as far back as June 2008. Sam's Club in Tyler is also reporting an increase in sales of about 20 percent.

"[A] Little more expensive model's going to have locking bolts all the way around," said Warren. "The interior? Not quite as fancy as some of them, you know, other models, but, still good protection."

Fire protection and burglaries are the main reasons people are investing in safes. Those and the fact that at least you'll know your valuables are safe.
