TYLER, TX (KLTV) - We've heard of good and bad cholesterol but good and bad fat?
You'd think all fat is bad but doctors say there is a better kind called brown fat which helps burn more calories as opposed to the bad white fat.
Endocrinologist Meg Reitmeyer with Trinity Mother Francis, says it's true that women typically carry more brown fat, the good kind.
She says women are more pear-shaped, carrying their fat around the hips. Whereas men are typically apple-shaped, carrying it around the middle. She says that's the most dangerous place.
"You know we think of guys being more of the potbelly and that's where you see the health risk," said Dr. Reitmeyer. "The higher your waist circumference the more likely you are to have heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure. Whereas women, at least until menopause, carry more of their fat on the hips and less on the waist line."
Babies have a lot of brown fat after birth, which helps keep them insulated. Dr. Reitmeyer said genetics play a huge factor in which kind of fat you're predisposed to. So she says there's no magic pill we can take to convert bad fat into good fat. Just keep exercising and cutting down on portion sizes.
