EAST TEXAS (KLTV) - A glance at the assignment board spelled it out for me. It was "Cheap Eats" time and you know what means.
Our first stop was Hickory Fare Bar-be-cue in Tyler.
"We fix food fresh everyday," said the restaurant's owner. "Love our customers and always have them come back."
Chopping up slow cooked goodness, owner James Lancaster put together a delicious deal. A chopped beef sandwich, small fry and a cold drink was right on the money at $5 even.
Next up, we left for the Honey Tree in Tyler. Focusing on the healthier side of food, they made the "Cheap Eats" cut. Deceptively filling, three crackers loaded with the spread of your choice and a freshly brewed iced tea only puts you out $4.87. But, can we can do better?
With two down, we stopped by Dooleys Sports Grill in Mineola, who is trying to help keep money in your wallet.
"Right now, the economy is hurting everybody and if we can do something to help people out a little bit...we'd like to do that," said the owner.
I chose the quarter pounder and watched skilled hands bring it to life. The finished product, a burger with chips and a drink, even a pickle, added up to just $4.84.
Then, I saw it, almost hidden. Mmm a hot dog stand in front of Lowe's that offered a menu of nothing but "Cheap Eats."
"Well, when we first started this we decided, we would never have a lunch more than $5.," said the person manning the stand.
With customers lining up, I ordered and waited. Minutes later, I was served this week's "Cheap Eats" winner: A ten inch jalapeno and cheese dog with a can drink for, count it, $4.
