TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Hit allergens before they hit you. That's their ad; all about playing offense on your allergies. We found new allergen block treatments, for adults and kids, hitting store shelves for around $15. While it is new, allergist Paul Sharkey said it is getting some good reviews.

"I've certainly had patients come in and I've had one or two say it works real well," said Sharkey.

The gel you rub under your nose is advertised to have an ionic-charge to it, acting like a shield and blocking allergens.

"Instead of breathing stuff right up your nose, it's getting trapped right here and never entering your nose so you don't have an allergic reaction," Sharkey explained.

The concept almost seems too good to be true.

"[It] seems a little fantastic, but that's how they say it works," he said.

It claims to work indoors and outdoors by blocking airborne allergens like pollen, pet dander, and ragweed, but Dr. Sharkey warns there are no medical studies to support or rate its effectiveness. He says these are not FDA regulated products.

"I would caution you that you're going at your own risk trying this, but it certainly appears to be safe," he said.

So it's a gamble at the price of about 15 bucks, but if it works like some say it could make Spring a lot more enjoyable for allergy sufferers.

Doctors recommend the obvious when battling allergies: avoid things you are allergic to and take appropriate medication that your doctor prescribes. If you're still suffering, you may need to see a specialist.
