TYLER, TX (KLTV) - More than 600 middle school girls were at Tyler Junior College Saturday exploring career opportunities in the Expanding Your Horizons Program.  Hosted by the American Association of University Women the program encourages and educates young women in fields of math, science and technology.

Local women in careers of communications, medical personnel, and computer programming spoke to the girls about what it takes to be successful in their field.

"They don't have to follow that old traditional female role," said event organizer Deborah VanDeVelde.  "There are a lot of careers available for young women, and they can be every bit as successful as the boys that they grow up with, and they can have exciting and fun careers that prepare them for the future and also provide a service to the community that they live in."   Since it's first year 19 years ago, the program has reached nearly twelve thousand girls.
