Two Women Killed, One Man Injured in Wreck

A car wreck Monday morning leaves two Tyler women dead, and one man injured.

It happened on Highway 271 around 10:50 a.m. According to Tyler police, Cora Rice Merritt (53) lost control of her Dodge Intrepid, crossed the highway and hit another vehicle. Merritt and her passenger Sarah Maxey Davis (52) were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the other car, 44-year old Ben May of Gladewater is in critical condition at East Texas Medical Center. May spent the afternoon in surgery.

Police believe Merrit swerved to avoid another vehicle merging onto the highway. A witness who climbed out of his truck to extinguish flames on one of the cars found both women dead.

"It terrifies you, you know you think of your family," said truck driver Jose Quiroga. "I was just talking to my wife earlier about a fire extinguisher for the house. I guess it's a coincidence, I have to use one just minutes after I had talked to her about going to Lowes to get one."
