LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) - One East Texas town saw a one percent drop in crime, but almost double the number of murders.

The city of Longview has released their crime statistics for 2008. In 2007, Longview reported five murders, last year that number was at nine. The number of aggravated assaults increased by 36. However, burglaries and robberies dropped last year. The number of burglaries decreased by eleven and robberies dropped by 25.

"So, actually, this years crime stats for the murder rate is actually keeping up with our 30 year crime stat," explained Kevin Brownlee, with the Longview Police Department. "We do average right around eight to 10 murders a year. There's been several of them that pertain to illegal crime, mainly narcotics."

Officer Brownlee says of last year's nine murders only two still remain unsolved.
