Youngest mayor of Tyler dies

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Longtime Tyler residents may remember when James Fair was elected as the city's mayor in 1950. At 25, he was the youngest person ever elected to the position. He died Friday at the age of 84. In addition to his time as mayor, Fair was also a member of the City Commission, and spent time on several area boards. Later in life, he was chairman of the Tyler Chamber of Commerce, and his friends say he was a leader, but not in the usual way.

"He was not necessarily one of these gung-ho, cheerleader type, but he would just try to do what was right, and what needed to be done," said Henry Bell, III.

Funeral services are set for Monday afternoon at 3pm, at the Marvin United Methodist Church.
