Update: Murder suspect, caught last night, arraigned this morning

LAIRD HILL, TX (KLTV) - An East Texas murder suspect was arraigned Friday morning before Judge Bob Richardson in Rusk County.

31-year-old Kevin Michael Smith is believed to be responsible for a double shooting near the town of Laird Hill Thursday afternoon.

Rusk County officials say they caught Smith in Marshall after a high speed chase, Thursday night, that started in Ore City.

Inside a mobile home in Laird Hill, deputies found 45-year-old Steven McWilliams, dead after being shot with a pistol. Stormi Chasteen was also shot. She has been treated and released from the hospital.

Smith is charged with first degree murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

"After he was spiked, my understanding is he jumped the curb or wrecked it," said William Brown, a Rusk District Attorney Investigator. "You name it we had somebody out there. When you're all working together good results happen."

Authorities say with a fear of possible retaliation, the school where Chasteen's daughter attended, Leverett's Chapel, was on lock down Friday with a Rusk County constable on hand.

Smith is being held on $1,000,000 bond for the murder charge and a $75,000 bond for the aggravated assault charge.
