Tax Free Weekend Gets Underway In Texas

People all over Texas are taking advantage of the state's tax free holiday. It started today and goes until Sunday.

With back-to-school right around the corner, parents hit the stores this morning to take advantage of the tax free holiday. Kimberly Massett was stocking up on bac- to-school clothes for her son. "Basically, just jeans and t-shirts and tennis shoes and stuff like that," said the 45-year-old single mother.

This weekend, Texas shoppers won't have to pay Uncle Sam any sales tax...on certain items. "Anything under one hundred dollars' value, if the customer buys it, there is no sales tax charged these three days," said Mark Graham, co-manager at WalMart. Items such as shirts, pants, socks and shoes are tax free.

Massett plans to spend somewhere around $200 to $300 on her son's back to school clothes. She says she waits for tax free weekend to do her back-to-school shopping. "We do this every year and it's a really good deal. It helps to save a lot of money," says Massett. Others don't agree. "Well, with three kids, if I spend a hundred dollars on them each, I would only be saving $24 so it's not really worth my time," says 33-year old Carrie Williams, a stay-at-home mother of three.

Retailers expect sales to be up this year. "It's gonna be a busy weekend, says Graham.
