TYLER, TX (KLTV) - From the Lone Star state to Capitol Hill, a list of the richest and poorest members of Congress from Texas has been released. Topping the charts as the "poorest" Texan in Congress is East Texas Representative Louie Gohmert.

Congressman Gohmert has a negative net worth of $150,000.

Serving his third term in the U.S. House of Representatives, Congressman Louie Gohmert says he was called to the position.

"[I did what I felt] I was supposed to do, and I left the bench...ended up running," said Gohmert. "It was complete committal."

It was a commitment both physically and financially. According to personal finance reports filed by each member of Congress, the East Texan is the poorest congressman in Texas.

"I'm obviously not in it for the money," he said. "People think it is a grand, glorious lifestyle. They have no idea. It is an honor. It will always be an honor but it takes a toll...We've had to tighten our belt and, like I say, we have sold off all our assets and now we are selling our house."

The report offers a broad picture of how much each politician is worth, based on assets and liabilities. Their net worth does not include their congressional salaries of $174,000.

"We've got three daughters that are going to college. Our youngest is just finishing," he said. "We've got a bunch of student loans. Otherwise, we are in decent shape."

They are in decent shape compared to some politicians who use their titles to cash in.

"There are a lot of people that have become millionaires by being in Congress," he said. "I am not one of them."

Gohmert says he pays for his own living expenses in Washington D.C., often using the couch in his office as a bed.

"That's why I'm there," he said. "I didn't go because it was going to be an easy job. I went because we have to turn things around or this nation will not give our kids a better chance than what we had."

The richest Texan in Congress, according to the personal financial reports, is Representative Michael McCaul from Houston. His net worth is listed at $38,000,000.
