Released by Leland J. Benoit with the Marshall Police Department:

The Marshall Police Department has made a significant impact to the flow of illegal drugs through our city. On Sunday January 24, 2010 at approximately 09:30 a.m., a Marshall Police K-9 Unit detained the driver of a U-Haul truck near the intersection of US Hwy 59 and Pinecrest Drive for a traffic violation. During the course of the detainment, there was conflicting information and suspicious behavior displayed from the driver. MPD K-9 Atila and MPD Officer J. Clark conducted an exterior check of the vehicle which resulted in an alert for narcotics.

A subsequent search of the storage area of the U-Haul revealed 1200 pounds of marijuana hidden in various pieces of furniture. The driver, Juan Carlos Delgado DOB 11-03-1970 of St. Louis, Missouri was arrested for Possession of Marijuana > 50lbs<2000lbs which is a second degree felony.

Delgado was transported to the Harrison County Sheriff's Department where he was processed and is awaiting arraignment.

This seizure is believed to be the largest single seizure of marijuana in the history of the Marshall Police Department and has an estimated street value of $1,000,000 to $1,250,000.
